Puppies and kittens should have a feal sample tested for intestinal parasites (roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms, giardia and coccidia) starting at 8 weeks if age. A large majority of young animals have worms, they can be spread before birth, from nursing, from the environment, or from fleas. Two consecutive fecal samples are recommended during initial kitten and puppy visits in order to identify eggs that are shed intermittently and then once yearly during your pets’ annual wellness exams. Parasites I can cause a few different symptoms such as itchy skin, poor hair coat, stunted growth, pot-bellied appearance, vomiting, bloody or discolored diarrhea, and death. Treatment for parasites is determined by the type of parasite, and to prevent re-infestation of the environment feces should be disposed of. There is more information in our pet health library.
