Tonometry

It is crucial for your pet’s vision that we detect and treat glaucoma and other problems with intraocular pressure (pressure within the eye) as quickly as possible. We test your pet’s eye pressure with a device called a tonometer, the testing is not painful and doesn’t require sedation.

Glaucoma can cause permanent vision loss or even blindness if not treated immediately. It’s recommended that pets who have suffered eye injuries or breeds that are prone to developing glaucoma should come in for regular measurement in order to monitor and begin treatment as soon as possible. Call us right away if you have any questions on if your pet is at higher risk for glaucoma.

Also contact the office if you notice any problems such as dilated (enlarged) pupils, clouding of the cornea 9the normally clear outer layer of the eye), red or bloodshot eyes, one eye protruding or appearing larger than the other, squinting, or tearing. Glaucoma is painful and your pet may react by rubbing or pawing at the eyes or rubbing their head against the floor or furniture more than normal.
